Trunk Show Tuesday: Mystery Quilt

I am exploring some old family trunks and found this small red & white quilt. I believe I remember playing dolls with this quilt, many years ago... but have no idea of origin or story behind it. The strips vary... from 1/4" to 1/2" and then there is the crooked white top stitching/quilting... doesn't feel like any batting.

The size is roughly 28" x 35"... is that a cradle size... baby... or maybe just a doll quilt?? The backing makes me wonder if it might be a bit (lots?) older than my half century plus years??? I've no living relatives to fill in the blanks... so if anyone wishes to play make believe or take a guess... I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  3. What a pretty red and white quilt! Looks almost like it is a log cabin type block starting with the little red piece in the center. Pretty border, too. You have a little gem there. Carol

  4. I love this! And I love how your Kitchen Angel sorta crept into one of the photos!

I hope somebody is able to help you sleuth down the era and pattern or purpose of this little gem. Even the wonky quilting is cool.

  5. Dear Chartreuse, first I want to thank you for stopping by on my blog and leave a comment! Then I'd like to say that this little red quilt is a lovely baby-quilt. I think it is a courthouse-step pattern, but I really could not tell you anything about its history. Well enjoy the weekend, the twins and your "reverse life" (what a wonderful way of saying this).

  6. I'm just writing a post on doll quilts so this captured my heart! Beautiful photo, as are all your quilts.

  7. it is courthouse steps (log cabin variation) and really small blocks. I would call that cradle size. Probably the person who made it just decided they had had enough when it got to that size and stopped.

  11. What a gorgeous little red and white quilt. There is so much work in it and it's in great condition. What a shame there's no label on it!

  12. OH what a great quilt
I LOVE It. The size leads me to believe it is more of a crib quilt than a doll quilt. I love the graphicness of the quilt.
    A treasure for sure!

  13. I absolutely love this quilt. I am a lover of small wall hanging sized quilts. This reminds me of doll quilts and crib quilts. I think I might have to make one like this. It is gorgeous!!!! Thanks for sharing it with us. Stephanie
